Autumn Leaves – Narcoleptic Karma (2007)

Review by Tony Cannella

AUTUMN LEAVES are a band out of Torino, Italy. First the introductions: Kely (vocals), Marco (guitars), Andrea (bass), Alessandra (drums) and Fabio (keyboards). They have just released six songs and judging from the material contained within, this band is headed in the right direction.

AUTUMN LEAVES have a lot going for them musically, their talent really shine through on the six tracks that I have heard. Now, on to the music. 'Final Dissonance' starts off heavy and features a strong guitar riff and some powerhouse vocal work from Kely. 'In My Past' starts slow but quickly evolves into a mid-tempo track that shows the diversity of the band. 'Morgana' has a great melody and lots of atmosphere going for it, another mid-tempo number. 'Sigil' starts off slow but then gets heavier. It features a great solo from Marco and the interplay between the keyboards and guitars are breathtaking. 'The Awake' is another slower tempo song. I wouldn't say it's a ballad, but it is the closest thing to one. The last of the six songs offered up here is called 'SimeD' and it is probably my favorite. At almost 7-minutes this is the longest track and the most epic in it's scope. The song is heavy, symphonic and dramatic. Once again there is great interplay between the keyboards and guitarist. This song is very well crafted with lots of changes that should satisfy even the most jaded musicians.

AUTUMN LEAVES are described as a progressive metal band, but I hear different elements in their music as well. They have the ability to be musical without being self indulgent and too showy. It's obvious, that with AUTUMN LEAVES the songs come first. They should appeal to a wide range of metal fans. The sound and production value are very good. The only drawback of this collection is that it is only 6 songs and 32 minutes, I definitely wouldn't mind hearing more. If there is any justice, AUTUMN LEAVES will soon get a record deal. Based on these six songs, it's only a matter of time.
